Lamayuru sits about 125 km west of Leh at roughly 3,500 m, where the highway winds through a strange landscape of soft, eroded clay. Geologists believe it was the bed of an ancient lake; travellers simply call it moonland. Above the village, Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yungdrung, is counted among the oldest religious sites in Ladakh, with roots older than the monastery buildings themselves.
It is a natural stop between Kargil and Leh, and the start of several treks. Arrive late afternoon or early morning, when low sun turns the hills gold.

FAQs
- Why is it called moonland?
- The pale, eroded clay hills, probably the remains of an ancient lake bed, look like a lunar surface, especially in low light.
- Is it worth staying overnight?
- If you can: the light at dawn and dusk is the best part, and the village is peaceful once the day traffic leaves.
