The Ladakh packing list I give every traveller

By Abhishek Yadav · 20 August 2026 · 2 min read

Ladakh can swing from scorching sun to freezing wind in an afternoon. A short, honest packing list for summer trips, and the things you can safely leave at home.

Most packing lists for Ladakh are far too long. You do not need expedition gear for a road trip in July. What you need is the right layers, serious sun protection and a few small things that make high-altitude travel comfortable.

Clothing: think in layers

  • Base layers: two or three quick-drying T-shirts and one thermal set for cold nights at the lakes.
  • Warm mid-layer: a fleece or light wool sweater.
  • Insulated jacket: a packable down or synthetic jacket. Even in summer, Pangong and Tso Moriri evenings are near freezing.
  • Windproof outer layer: a light shell for the passes, where the wind is relentless.
  • Comfortable trousers, and one warmer pair for nights.
  • A warm hat, light gloves and a buff or scarf for wind and dust.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip; you do not need heavy boots unless you are trekking.

Sun and dryness

  • Sunglasses with UV protection: the light at altitude is fierce, and snow glare on the passes is harsh.
  • High-SPF sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Lip balm with SPF and a good moisturiser: the air is extremely dry.

Health and comfort

  • your regular medicines, plus a small first-aid kit
  • oral rehydration salts
  • anything your doctor recommends for altitude
  • a refillable water bottle (filtered water refills are common in Leh)

Documents and money

  • Photo ID with copies, and permits if you need them
  • Cash: ATMs in Leh can run dry, and remote areas rarely take cards
  • a postpaid SIM from a major network, as prepaid connections from outside Ladakh often don't work

Small things that help

  • a power bank, since electricity at the lakes may run only for a few evening hours
  • a head torch
  • a cloth bag (Ladakh restricts plastic)
  • offline maps, downloaded before you leave Leh

What you can leave at home

Heavy trekking boots for a road trip, too many cotton clothes (they dry slowly and don't insulate), and your best jewellery. Pack light: you can buy or rent most warm gear in Leh if you forget something.
